Wood Handicrafts and Wood Engraving
Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) is famous for its exquisite wood carvings. Here this carving work is done on rosewood and teak wood and various decorative and useful items are made from them, as well as valuable furniture is made. Ornamental writing is engraved on these according to the object. This surface engraving art here is an excellent example of wood art. Here Mughalia influence is visible on the engravings made on various objects. Especially the lattice carving of the partition represents the Mughal style. Here the beginning of this art is believed to be from the Mughal period. It is said that this art was brought here by Iranian artisans. Since then till today this wood craft is being made here in the traditional way. Sheesham wood is found in abundance in this district, so this art flourished well here. This artistic work of woodcraft is mostly done by the craftsmen of Muslim (Rajputana) and Sharma (carpenter) castes.
The decoration of various items made here is done by excavation method and mosaic work is done for decoration in it. Brass and ivory are used to decorate them. Here the furniture related to home use includes partition board, chair-table, dining table, tripod, post, lawn-chair, swing-chair, bench, sofa set, cot, diwan, dressing table, Glass - frame, door, swing, T.V. Unit, corner, table, shelf, book-almirah, cloth-almirah and chest etc. are specially made. A lot of hard work is done in their excavation and decoration. With this, Hursa-Belan, Gullak, Sandukchi, Vase, Matki, Bangle-Adda, Clock, Tray, Telephone, Adda etc. are made in useful items and in handicrafts elephant, horse, lion, stork, eagle, children's horse swing and Large ornamented utensils etc. are specially made. At present iron decorative frames are being used in furniture. In this frame, various useful and decorative items are being made using exquisitely carved wood. The wood products made here are exported to many other countries including Europe and America. In Nagina (Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh) and Ludia Kavda, (Bhuj-Kutch, Gujarat) similar types of useful and decorative items are made of wood, but here the decorative items are mostly made in small size.
